Background and Experience
Mr. Straka is currently a Acting Chief Assistant City Attorney, he primarily practices in the area of labor and employment law and advises all city departments on issues relating to employee discipline, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour law, family and medical leave law, disability law, and labor law. Mr. Straka also regularly advises the police department on issues relative to the Public Safety Officers Procedural Bill of Rights Act. He is also responsible for prosecuting employee disciplinary appeals on behalf of the city before the Personnel Board and representing the city in front of the unemployment appeals board. He also participates in the negotiation of employee union memorandums of understanding, as well as the drafting of employee contracts, city resolutions, ordinances, processes and policies. He also provides training on various employment- related issues to city management and staff. Mr. Straka also participates in the defense of civil litigation filed against the city.
Prior to joining the City Attorney's office in 2001, Mr. Straka was employed in private practice concentrating on employment law and public sector labor law, particularly the representation of public safety officers and unions.
Mr. Straka is a member of the State Bar of California. He is admitted to practice in California and before the Central United States District Court.
Mr. Straka received his Juris Doctor from Cleveland- Marshall College of Law. He received his B.S. in Journalism from Kent State University.
