Councilmember Vicente Sarmiento and his family have lived in and around Santa Ana since 1965. He attended John Muir Elementary, Sierra Elementary, and Willard Intermediate Schools. Councilmember Sarmiento now lives in a 1929 historic home in the Saddleback View neighborhood, three blocks from where he grew up. Presently, he and his wife Eva, also an attorney, are the principal owners of a law practice in Santa Ana. They have three children, ages 15, 12, and 9, whom they hope will learn the value of public service and contributing to their community.
In January of 2007, Councilmember Vicente Sarmiento was appointed to the Santa Ana City Council to represent Ward 1. He was formally elected in November 2008 and November 2012 and is currently serving his second term.
Among many of his accomplishments, Councilmember Sarmiento is most proud of preventing the City from becoming insolvent and avoiding bankruptcy protection. During his time on the City Council, Santa Ana, as well as many other municipalities, experienced years of serious economic challenges as a result of slower revenue growth, combined with rapidly escalating costs. Despite a series of budgetary shortfalls, ranging from $13 – $46 million over the past three years, the City Council balanced its budget and avoided a fiscal crisis. Second, during his tenure, crime rates have decreased steadily. In 2011, Forbes magazine listed Santa Ana as the fourth safest city in the country among cities of similar population. Third, understanding that Santa Ana was lacking park space, the City increased its inventory of open space by approximately 22 additional acres in the past few years. Finally, the City is completing its ambitious effort to improve and repair nearly 300 miles of residential and neighborhood streets.
Councilmember Sarmiento served on the Orange County Water District Board of Directors from January 2013 to February 2015 and served as First Vice President as well as a member of several committees including Administration and Finance Issues, Communication and Legislative Liaison, Water Issues, Property Management, and Retirement. He also is the Chairman of the Oversight Board of the Successor Agency to the former Redevelopment Agency for the City of Santa Ana. The Oversight Board has the fiduciary responsibility of handling the dissolution of the City’s former Redevelopment Agency. Councilmember Sarmiento also chairs the City Council Committees for Development and Transportation, and Legislation; and he’s also a member of the Finance, Economic Development & Technology Committee.
Councilmember Sarmiento graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law. More recently, he attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and successfully completed the Certificate Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government.
