National Medal Award

Every year, the Institute of Museum and Library Services selects ten institutions to receive the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor presented to a library or museum in the United States. In 2016, the Santa Ana Public Library was awarded the National Medal because of its long dedication to making a difference in our community.

Along with the other recipients, the Santa Ana Public Library was invited to a special ceremony for the National Medal at the White House where each library and museum was presented with the medal by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The awarding institution, the Institute for Museum and Library Service, supported the trip to Washington, D.C. for a representative of each institution and one community member whose life was changed by that institution.  The community representative for our library was Victor Gudiel, now a Senior at UC Santa Cruz, and a long time library volunteer and employee.

The National Medal award has brought the Santa Ana Public Library to the forefront of library service, making them a leader amongst information institutions.

To highlight the award, a special celebration was held at the library where the community could gather to join us in marking the momentous occasion. Two hundred attendees enjoyed refreshments, live music, a sampling of library programming and services, and a screening of the National Medal award ceremony.

Another exciting part of the National Medal award package was an opportunity to participate in interviews conducted by Storycorps. Storycorps is a national project to instruct and inspire people to record each other’s’ stories in sound. For three days, Storycorps visited the Santa Ana Public Library and sat down with community members and staff to record and archive their stories of how the library has impacted their lives. These stories will soon be archived at the Library of Congress.
