STEP Program

STeP: Skills for Teen Parents

Skills for Teen Parents (STeP) program, provides a series of free life-skills workshops, learning opportunities, and support services offered to teenage parents in our community. STeP began at the library in January of 2016 with eleven young moms ranging from 17-to-29 years, and ended June 22, 2016 with an intimate graduation celebration for participants. We were fortunate to continue with step during summer and now fall 2016.

Many of the participants were former foster youth from non-affluent backgrounds. Moms participated in twenty-five plus workshops where they learned life skills and completed hands-on activities. Some of the topics covered were: parenting, financial literacy, cooking demonstrations, health and wellness, baby care, career, college, and financial aid. Additionally, job search strategies, job interview tips, resume building, child abuse prevention, emergency and safety skills, time management, personal appearance have been but a few of the workshops made available through STeP.
