The Planning Division maintains the City's General Plan and Zoning documents. Planning is also responsible for environmental review, historic preservation, and new development. Planning provides staff support to the City's Planning Commission, the Historic Resources Commission, and the City Council.
The Planning Division has three sections: Current Planning, Regional and Advanced Planning, and the Planning Counter. These sections work together with other City agencies to provide development services and long range planning to help the City achieve economic and social well-being.

Current Planning serves as the primary contact with developers, business persons and individuals proposing new development in the City. This section processes discretionary actions and reviews development plans.
Regional & Advanced Planning maintains the City's General Plan, creates design and development standards, conducts special studies, performs historic preservation duties, and amends the Zoning code as necessary.
The Planning Public Counter is the first stop for most people wishing to obtain permits for their home or business, as well as to propose new development. Zoning information may be obtained here.
