a musical séance on the summer solstice
featuring ghosts, plants, percussion & electronics
Spooky Action Labs is a multimedia project that combines drums & percussion with computer software & synthesizers to create original music. This mobile, modular space welcomes fellow artists, listeners, and environments into an imaginative experience.
“Spooky Action Labs at the Gospel Swamp” is a special collaboration with the Heritage Museum of Orange County (HMOC) to mark the 150th Anniversary of the City of Santa Ana. Greg Camphire, a musician & 2018 recipient of Santa Ana’s Investing in the Artist Grant, spent nearly a year visiting the HMOC to research and record sounds including the antique piano, pump organ & Victrola turntable in the Kellogg House; the 113-year-old piano in the Maag Farmhouse; and the percussive metallic tones emanating from the OC Blacksmith Guild.
In the Gospel Swamp nature preserve, sounds were also created utilizing MIDI Sprout, a new form of technology that converts the electromagnetic currents of plant life into musical sounds. In essence, these plants become “bandmates,” each with their own unique sonic signatures. Native species featured in this performance will include California Scrub Oak, Black Sage, Arroyo Willow, Chaparral Yucca, and many more.
Performing on drums, percussion, and electronics, Camphire will remix all these sounds with time-traveling rhythms from the past, present, and future—from ancient folkloric ritual polyrhythms; to swing and shuffle grooves of the 20th century; to forward-thinking hip-hop, jungle, and dubstep beats. All of the above will be combined in a series of multiple afternoon performances during the museum's annual Viva Verde! event, celebrating the culture, history, and ecology of the historic Gospel Swamp.
