SoCalGas Pipeline Modernization Project on Grand Avenue & Chestnut Avenue

Date: May, 10 2019 Category: Notification

SoCalGas is performing a pipeline modernization project on a segment of natural gas pipeline on South Grand Avenue and East Chestnut Avenue in Santa Ana.

Crews are expected to begin work in the area on April 1, 2019 and continue through March 2020. Lanes will be reduced from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. but lane closures may extend beyond work hours on certain days/weeks.

To perform this pipeline work safely, full lane closures will take place on the westbound lanes of East Chestnut Avenue before the South Grand Avenue intersection.

K-rail barriers will help direct the flow of traffic. Residents and local business owners may hear some work-related noise. During work hours, commuters passing by the work site may see excavation, equipment and vehicles.

As part of this project, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas®) will be performing an In-Line Inspection (ILI) on a segment of one of our natural gas transmission pipelines, beginning on May 13, 2019 and is expected to be completed in approximately 5 days (weather and other factors permitting).  This work is part of our system-wide plan to further enhance the safety of the pipelines. This test involves performing an inline assessment of a high-pressure line, using an inspection tool. This survey is federally mandated per the Pipeline Safety Act of 2002.

What to expect during the ILI:

  • Full closure of Chestnut Avenue at Grand Avenue
  • SoCalGas construction vehicles and its contractors’ trucks along with heavy equipment
  • During this time you may smell natural gas and hear construction noise

No interruption to natural gas service is anticipated. Residents may smell the odor of natural gas. Although this is normal when crews are working, SoCalGas encourages anyone who smells gas to call 1-800-427-2200. SoCalGas is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
